Ship rigging ropes were all hemp, the sails all hemp. Hemp was grown, in abundance, it was also used for food, housing, clothes, paper, vertualy everything, up until the 1920's. Up until 1917 it was used as a medicine. Today they call that, medical marijuana. The government and corporate media have put that much of a negative spin on hemp, all you have to do is look at the leaf of the plant and you asociate it with marijuana.
